WHO is he?
“My name is Dan Hibberd. I’m an artist from Sheffield, currently living in Leicester. My first memories of music would be my dad playing Pink Floyd and Genesis in the car, or my mum playing Bryan Adams whilst cleaning the house. So I got off to a good start fairly early. I started playing music when I started secondary school. I was part of the young generation from Sheffield who was inspired by the Arctic Monkeys. Which lead me to first picking up a bass in year 8, but I got my first real 6-string in year 10. As I got older I got more and more into making my own music, and exploring the different ways in which I could do that.”
WHAT is he singing about?
“I could write essays on what these songs are about but I’ll try to put it into a nutshell. Essentially, The songs are snippets of things that stick with me that I feel a need to express. They are all pretty personal, like diary entries in many ways. I can be a bit of a thinker, so I use the songs to channel thoughts and clear my head. I like the idea that music is an art form, and that songs can be open to interpretation in many ways by different people, and hope this is the same for the songs I write.”
“I listen to a lot of folk, indie, alternative music as well as a lot of electronic music so I take bits of inspiration musically from there. Fundamentally I’m making the music that I want to hear using a mixture of both of all these genres. Also, in many ways my own songs inspire me, as a footing to continue to improve and make the best music I possibly can.”WHERE did he grow up?
“I grew up in Sheffield where I spent many of my younger years playing in bands in venues across the city. Today I don’t know how much this has influenced the music I make, aside from being the reason I started getting involved in music. The music scene there is arguably one of the best in the country; the bands to come out of Sheffield and festivals such as Tramlines are testament to that.”
“I’ve lived in Utrecht in the Netherlands for the past year and that has influenced me more recently. Not necessarily from a music perspective, but the people I met and the city just inspired me to get back into something I love doing. So coming back to live in Sheffield over summer I was thinking, ‘I want to write music again.’ I feel my musical motivations come in waves, sometimes I won’t write music for months, then all of sudden get the urge again. But it is always certain that the urge does return, eventually.”
