WHO are they?
As Elephants Are are Ben Stratford (vocals, guitar), Harry Roche (bass), Joe Miller (guitar), Robert Waters (drums) and Sam Winfield (keyboards). They are part of the Once Upon A Time Records family.
“It all started with a [music technology] college project and it was going to be nothing more than that. We never used to go in, so we [Ben, Harry] found out that we had to record this piece of music, like four tracks, and we didn’t have a band to record”. So they started writing a few songs of their own with the help of old school friends Joe and Rob. “And even after that it was still a college thing but the feedback that we were getting from tutors was like ‘this is really good’ sort of thing and we were really happy. We liked playing music together, it was just a way to hang out with people we really liked and it kind of just went from there.”(x)
WHAT is the inspiration behind their songs?
Lucifer – “I saw this girl and didn’t know her actual name so I just started calling her Lucifer”.
Youth Blood – “I was watching Twilight with my mum when I wrote this song, purely because I was like ‘this film is really bad so I’ll write a song about how bad it is’ but the song is not actually about how bad it was, it just fitted to the film”.
War Cry – “We booked some studio time and we had a different song to record but the night before we just wrote this song and I had to come up with the lyrics in about half an hour in a car park because I was about to sing them in the booth.”
WHY ‘As Elephants Are’?
“The name was from a wild life magazine. We gave ourselves a deadline for the name and it was the only thing we had to read and it was just there… which was lucky for us as we were struggling”. (x)
